AMC announced on December 21, 2012 that The Walking Dead had been renewed for a fourth season.[8] Scott M. Gimple replaced Glen Mazzara as the series' showrunner for the season,[16]which premiered on October 13, 2013 and consist of 16 episodes.[17] David Morrissey reprised his role as The Governor, despite his initial one-season contract.[18] Chad Coleman (Tyreese), Sonequa Martin-Green (Sasha), and Emily Kinney (Beth Greene) are promoted to series regulars in season 4, and Melissa Ponzio (Karen) returns in a recurring role.[19][20] Larry Gilliard, Jr. joins the main cast as Bob Stookey, a former Army medic.[21] Two more series regulars are to be added in addition to Gilliard; Michael Cudlitz as Abraham Ford and Josh McDermitt as Eugene Porter, both notable characters from the comics.[22] Christian Serratos is set to appear in a recurring role as Rosita Espinosa, along with Alanna Masterson in an unknown role, both of whom will have the option to become a regular in season 5.[23][24]
